Prof. Achola Pala is a pioneering Kenyan anthropologist, sociologist, and women's policy specialist, widely recognized for her foundational work in African feminist scholarship.

Academic & Professional Journey

Prof. Achola Pala earned her Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1977. Her doctoral thesis, "Changes in Economy and Ideology: A Study of Joluo of Kenya with Special Reference to Women," set the stage for a career dedicated to evaluating the impact of public policies on African women.

She has consistently challenged Western-centric development paradigms, arguing instead for analyses rooted in local African priorities, cultural traditions, and grassroots perspectives. Her work is foundational to "Women in Development" (WID) and "Gender and Development" (GAD) studies.
